Roy Pugh

Historian and Wordsmith

Roy Pugh is the author of several publications largely dealing with the history of Scotland.

Born in 1941 in Dunbar, he was educated at the local Dunbar Grammar School before commencing employment with the civil Service. Working in several government departments in Scotland including; The Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance, Department of Work & Pensions, General Post Office and the Secretary of States former Scottish Office at St Andrews House.

On taking voluntary early retirment in 1996, Roy fulfilled a lifelong ambition to write. His first book ‘The Deil’s Ain’ (The Devil’s Own): The story of the prosecution of Women in Scotland was published in 2001. This was followed by a major comprehensive History of Dunbar, Roy’s hometown, which was in research and writing for 13 years finally published in 2003 (currently out of print). Roy Pugh also published a series of shorter booklets looking at key historical focuses in his Hometown, proving incredibly popular with both locals and Tourists. The booklets provide a great place to learn more particularly for those interested in geneology and local history. Many authors find a wealth of well researched information within his booklet collection.

Roy has also conducted much work for local organisations including;  East Lothian Council, Dunbar Harbour Trust, The Dunbar Community Council, Town House Museum and Dunbar Trades Association. His works regularly appears in East lothian Life (the award winning countryside publication) and the Toun Cryer.

Roy Pugh has more recently also provided tours around his hometown for locals and visitors during the summer season, these tours in conjuction with the Dunbar Trades Association have proved to give a great experience to the many people who love to discover the rich history here in Dunbar.
